Gifting for the wellness junkie

It seems a little early to be thinking about holiday gifts, but for our media relations teams, it’s primetime to begin pitching gift guide features.

As an agency, overall wellness is a key client and consumer focus – from natural foods, beverages and beauty products to fitness and sustainable brands. It’s also a trend we monitor obsessively from a passion standpoint. Based on research, attendance at trade shows (like our favorite, Natural Products Expo West) and connecting with trend setters within the space, these are the top trends we’ve identified in how wellness junkies will spend their money this holiday season.

Healthy cocktails
The wellness consumer is changing nightlife culture in many ways. For example, replacing a night of clubbing with early morning yoga + dance parties like Daybreaker. When they do choose to drink, healthier cocktails are the norm. Expect dinner guests to bring bottles of natural wine and spirits from organic distilleries this holiday season.

Elevating stress reduction
The wellness junkie is hyperaware of how modern-day society is affecting our health. In particular, how stress zaps our wellbeing. And while self-care has become almost meme-like, it’s a trend that’s here to stay, in part to combat stress.

We expect sheet masks to continue increasing in popularity (they’re perfect for stocking stuffers and gift exchanges with friends). In particular, we anticipate more organic varieties will become available, like Orgaid (currently, one of the only companies offering organic sheet masks). In addition, little rituals that bring you to the present and into a state of mindfulness will continue to be popular, like home manicures with a natural nail color, a luxurious bath or afternoon / evening tea.

Buying fewer, better things
Over consumption is out. Fast fashion is dying. What’s taking its place? Thoughtful purchases of items that will last. As gifts, we’re expecting consumers will shift to giving items that their recipients will use for years instead of a season. Additionally, consumers will continue to gift experiences and consumables as they’re striving for less waste. We’re seeing a resurgence in subscription boxes that are helping shoppers curate these thoughtful (and sometimes hard to find) gifts, like Tavour and CAUSEBOX.

Less waste, less plastic
While beautifully wrapping a gift is often how we think about packaging during the holiday season, consumers will be thinking about how to reduce their overall plastic consumption, too. Cosmetic companies leading the way with glass packaging, like Evan Healy and Herbivore Botanicals, are beautiful enough to gift sans much wrapping – a win-win in waste reduction.

Additionally, in lieu of delivering homemade goods and gifts in tins, trays or saran wrap, we’ll be using Stasher bags – our favorite reusable silicon bags that have replaced Ziploc baggies in our pantries, and an added present from our super practical side. Another useful gift that will help reduce plastic waste? Tumblers + reusable straws for on-the-go coffee and smoothie drinkers.
